Hi, I’m Hannah!
I’m a high school English teacher, five years in and still learning something new every week. When I’m not grading essays, you’ll probably find me on the couch with a cup of tea (a little milk and honey, always) and my rescue dog, Calvin, curled up next to me. Yes, he’s named after Calvin & Hobbes, and yes, he lives up to it.
Why “Bookhounds”?
Honestly? I have a dog, I love books, and it sounded nice. Sometimes the simplest answer is the right one.
What you’ll find here
Mostly book reviews and recommendations. Fantasy is my home base, but I’ll pick up just about anything, especially when my students won’t stop talking about a certain book or series. If it’s got them excited, I want to know why.
You’ll also find the things I’ve tried in my classroom that actually made teaching a little easier: lessons, systems, and small sanity-savers I wish someone had handed me sooner.
Why I started this
My first couple of years of teaching were overwhelming. I learned a lot, mostly the hard way. Bookhounds is my way of passing that along, so the next new teacher (or tired veteran, or curious reader) doesn’t feel quite so alone in it.
The book I push on everyone
A Song of Ice and Fire. It’s popular for a reason, and it’s a fantastic jumping-off point for conversations about real history: politics, power, war, and all the messy people in between.
A few more things about me
I’m a firm believer that pizza counts as a food group. And in the summers, when school’s out, I offer dog training lessons, because apparently I can’t stop teaching even on break.
